List of dog friendly cafes in Canberra to try with your dog

Preparing for a Cafe Visit with Your Dog

Visiting a dog-friendly cafe in Canberra with your dog can be a great bonding experience and just plain fun for you both, but it’s important to be prepared before you go. You don’t want any pawblems to arise!

We’ve put together some quick tips to pawfectly prepare for a visit in one of the dog friendly cafes in Canberra with your canine companion:

  • Train your dog. As part of your dog’s training and socialisation, teach them specific skills for the cafe scene, like drop, rest or stay. Nobody likes, and you’re not going to be able to relax and enjoy your outing with a pawblematic pooch causing a ruckus!
  • Double-check if the cafe is dog friendly 🐶. If you’ve not been there before or you’re not 100% sure, it can’t hurt to check that your chosen place welcomes four-legged customers to avoid any doggy disappointments.
  • Avoid busy times. Plan your visit to a dog friendly cafe in Canberra during quieter times. Especially if your dog doesn’t do well in crowded or noisy places, then it’s best to choose a time when the cafe is calmer for them.
  • Clean pup, happy cafe people! Have your doggo smelling like roses (that is, looking their best) before heading out to try those delicious snacks at the cafe. This guarantees there are no nose-wrinkling doggie odours to put anyone off their coffee and cake 😉 Plus, so often, your dog will be greeted with pats on arrival, or fellow cafe will want to meet them.
  • Feed your dog before heading off. A well-fed pup is not only a contented (often snoozy) pup but also less likely to beg you or others for scraps.
  • Watch the weather! Take a quick peek at the forecast and choose a day with suitable weather for your cafe visit. One that is not too hot for your dog to be lazy about at the venue or where it’s going to rain because there’s a high probability of being outdoors, and there won’t always be shelter.
  • Pack the essentials. From water & water bowls (just in case!), their leash and waste bags bring along everything you and your furry friend need for a stress-free outing is impawtant. And don’t forget to pack all the pawssible things your pup might need to feel at home in the cafe environment! This may include a comfy mat or rug to place on the ground.
  • Snacks for doggo. If the cafe doesn’t have a dog menu or offer doggie treats, you might wish to bring along some of your dog’s favourite snacks to enjoy.
  • Pre-Cafe exercise. A little exercise can go a long way in helping your pooch relax during your visit to a dog-friendly cafe. ALSO, the last-minute walk around when you arrive to relieve themselves means you won’t have to jump out the minute your bacon & eggs arrive to attend to that!

Looking After Your Dog at a Dog-Friendly Cafe

Don’t let your pup be a cafe catastrophe! With a little preparation, this assures everyone will have a good time. Before I list down the dog-friendly cafes in Canberra, here are some things to remember so you can keep your dog’s cafe visit furbulous:

  • Choose quiet seating. Opt for a quieter area of the cafe and avoid foot traffic paths where your pup could become a tripping hazard. Plus, staying away from other furry guests is key if your pup is prone to overexcitement or nervousness!
  • A short leash is key! Keep your pup close and secure with a short leash or even try tethering them to your waist or chair leg so you can dine hands-free.
  • Doggy behaviour. Mind your pup’s manners while at the cafe so everyone dining in the place can have a great time. There are a few common sense dont’s (in case you need them 🙂). Don’t
    • Let your dog up on the table
    • Let them eat or drink from your plate or glass
    • Put your plate on the ground for your pup to lick
  • Pick up the pup-tastrophy 💩! Keep the cafe area clean and hygienic by always picking up after your dog.
  • Be flexible. If your pup becomes restless or disruptive, be prepared to take your snack or coffee to go.
  • Mind doggo’s allergies. Before ordering delicious snacks for your four-legged companion, double-check the ingredients, especially keeping in mind any food allergies that your dog may have and any foods that are toxic to dogs if you’re ordering a very special treat for them from the human menu!
  • Reward for the good pup. Don’t let your pup’s good behaviour go unnoticed! Show them some extra love and appreciation with a well-deserved reward, whether through a treat, some good ol’ belly rubs or a play in the park when you’ve finished dining at the dog-friendly cafe.
