Kathy McMillan, an emerging animal photographer based in Zillmere, has developed a body of work aimed at promoting animal rescue/adoption in the community.

‘Rescued’ is a series of 20 portraits of rescue animals, with their caregivers who feel rescued by these animals in return. The stories are varied, and filled with raw emotion. From stories of everyday companionship to tales of sadness, emptiness, grief, and ultimately, gratitude, joy, and hope.

McMillan will complete her Diploma in Photoimaging with CATC Design School in May 2016, and is a student member of the Australian Institute of Professional Photographers (AIPP). McMillan has operated a portraiture business for two years, and has photographed families, children, newborns, weddings, and pets, however her true passion is in photographing animals. McMillan says of her work “Animals give us so much more than we could ever hope to give them, and photographing them gives me joy, it makes my heart sing.”

This body of work is inspired by the bond people have with their companion animals. The candid approach taken by McMillan in photographing the subjects in their homes, naturally captures the emotional connection between animal and caregiver. Images are presented in black and white to enhance the feeling, and focus attention on that relationship. McMillan interviewed each of the caregivers for this project, and their touching stories form an important part of the exhibition and give context to the images.

McMillan plans for future work to delve deeper into animal cruelty issues.
