Dog Photo Challenge ~ Silhouette

Puppy Tales Photo Challenge ~ Silhouette

I LOVE the mystery, drama and mood of a silhouette photo.

While it is one dog captured, so often the sentiment or emotion of a silhouette photo can equate to all dogs – their playfullness, their adventures or the connection all dog lovers have with their dog.

They are perfect for conveying a story.

They are fabulous for simplifying a moment and when combined with a great sunset – so eye catching.

This Week’s Theme: Silhouette

The trick with photographing a silhouette is that you must be photographing into or towards a bright area leaving your dog to silhouette against this light.

How to take your dog’s silhouette photo:

  1. Head out with your dog at the right time.  Sunset or sunrise is going to give you a bright sky relative to your subject – perfect for capturing a silhouette.
  2. Find the right location – you want an open space when looking towards the sun or where the sun has just set so that there is lots of clear and bright open sky behind your dog.
  3. Position your dog – Position your dog so that the brightest light is behind them.  You want a strong outline so that the subject can easily be distinguished.  That means some positions or angles to the camera are going to be better than others.  For example, a side profile of a sitting dog would be more distinctive than a dog dropped with it’s ears and head down. You also want to double check that there is not some other object behind or close to you dog that will obscure their outline.  For example, a tree right behind them will make it difficult to distinguish the different subjects.
  4. Ensure your flash is tuned off.
  5.  Set your exposure  so that your camera is exposing for the bright sky (& therefore throwing your doggie subject into dark shadows, or a silhouette).  In an DLSR this will be through manual settings, changing your metering setting or adjusting your exposure compensation – play around to work out which works better for you.  On you camera phone – this can be as easy as touching where you want the exposure to be set or adjusting for a darker exposure.
  6. Focus on your dog, frame your photo and press the shutter.

While many silhouettes are taken against the sky – you can also create them indoors.  Here, you are still looking for a bright light to have behind your dog.  Window or door light can be used for this on a bright day.

We can’t wait to see your photos this week.

Don’t forget to also share the theme with or tag your dog loving friends who would love to join in!
